57. Milan, Italy. Top things to do for a weekend in Milano, Italy.

Welcome to episode 57 all about Milano, italy.

And I have to say that Milan was a really nice surprise even though we weren’t supposed to be going there.

Unfortunately, we had to change plans due to flooding in Italy and we tell you all about what happened.

With our weekend in Milan, we were determined to get out and explore as much as possible.  Listen to hear why trying to find the Duomo started out as a very frustrating problem and the simple fix that had us in front the stunning cathedral in under 10 minutes.

We also share all about the spectacular Galleria Vittorio Emanuel and the oldest café where we had breakfast. We went early to avoid the crowds and it was a great decision.

Listen as we were surprised and delighted to discover the canals in Milan - complete with gondolas.

We explored the canal area before we found a massive castle.  Come with us as we walk through the castle with its moat, towers and seven metre thick walls, to the extensive gardens and ponds that has its own Arc De Triumph replica – called the Arc of Peace.

Stay listening to the end as we walk around the outside of an ancient arena and eventually find a way to see what was actually inside – we were so surprised. Oh, and also hear about what the arena was used for centuries ago – trust me - you won’t be able to guess.

Hope you enjoy episode 57 all about Milan.

SHOW NOTES AND PICTURES BELOW

The Milan Duomo, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nascente, is an impressive and iconic landmark of Milan. Its construction began in 1386, and it took almost six centuries to complete the cathedral’s façade. The exterior of the cathedral is adorned with ornate and intricate details, including statues, 135 spires, and Gothic-style arches. The interior is equally impressive, featuring vibrant stained-glass windows, towering columns, and stunning artwork.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Built in the late 1800s, this stunning shopping mall boasts a glass and cast iron roof, intricate mosaics, and a range of high-end boutiques, designer shops, restaurants, and bars. We visited early in the morning and enjoyed breakfast at the Bifi Cafe - the oldest in the Galleria.

We were surprised and delighted to discover that Milan has canals, almost 50km of them. You can even see some gondolas floating down the canals. The area is full of bars and restaurants and lovely shops.

Another place we discovered was the Sforzesco castle. It was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, a Duke of Milan. The castle features stunning courtyards, ornate architecture, and a vast collection of art from renowned Italian artists. We loved exploring the giant courtyard area inside the castle’s 7 metre thick walls. You have to cross a drawbridge across a moat to enter the castle (although there is no water in it). There are towers on every corner of the square of the fortified castle and the walls are 200m long.

Sempione Park was a real highlight of our weekend in Milan. The sun was shining and it was such a nice way to spend a few hours wandering the park. We loved the Arc of Peace and the picturesque ponds and bridges. Sempione Park is right in the middle of Milan and easy to get to on pubic transport.

The Milan Arena, also known as the Arena Civica, is a beautiful historical stadium located in the heart of Milan next to Sempione Park. This Roman-style amphitheatre was built in 1806. It was originally used for recreating naval sea battles as the arena was filled with water. These days is home to a football field and athletics track. There are often concerts held in the arena with artists like The Cure and Sting.

We had a very enjoyable and full weekend in Milan and are so glad we were able to visit. It is a great city to explore and is quite walkable. There are many fashion shops if you want to spend some money - and some nice cafes and restaurant to enjoy as well. Lyle’s favourite place to have a wine was in Sempione Park at Bar Bianco, as was mine, but because we can’t have the same choice - I have to say my favourite place to have a coffee was at Cafe Bifi in the Galleria.
